In addition to the five main anti-aging lab tests listed on the page above, the following tests may also be helpful in your anti-aging program.
1. Vitamin D Level in your blood is important in preventing multiple cancers and many other health benefits. Recommendations may include 2000 international units per day. Sunlight forms Vitamin D in the skin but be careful because of skin cancer risk.
2.
Arachidonic acid (omega 6)/EPA
(omega 3) is a very important measure of silent inflammation in your body
which leads to the diseases of aging. These diseases take decades to
develop and the more advance warning you have the easier it will be to make
changes that bring the inflammation down. Arachidonic acid is derived from
eating pro-inflammatory omega 6 oils (soybean, corn, cottonseed etc.), fatty
meats, egg yolks etc. Omega 3
oils (EPA and DHA) derive from eating oily fish, such as salmon, and taking fish oil supplements. The
average American has a level of about 12. Under 3 is good, and the
ideal level is 1.5. It is actually possible to have too low a level
and under 1.00 is too low. If you have over 15 then you have significant
inflammation, and levels can go up to 50 to 100. This test helps you with
your dietary plan to stop eating omega 6 oils and do eat oily fish and fish
oil pills.
In the
Lyon Diet Heart Study the group that cut back on the pro-inflammatory omega
6 oils compared to the control group had a 70% reduction in fatal heart attacks
and no sudden cardiovascular deaths, which usually account for 50% of
cardiovascular deaths. The group that avoided omega 6 fatty acids had a
30% drop in their AA/EPA ratio and for each 1% drop in the ratio their risk of
dying from a heart attack was reduced 2%.
There were no differences in cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and blood
pressure in the two groups. An increased AA/EPA ratio is associated with
an increased likelihood of dementia, cancer and auto-immune diseases such as
multiple sclerosis. The test is not routine and can be obtained from
Age Diagnostic Laboratories,
Nutrasouce Diagnostics,
Genova Diagnostics and other labs.
3. 24 hour urine for multiple hormones can be very important if you have a hormonal imbalance. Expert physician guidance is necessary in the complex area of hormones.
4.
Dpd (Deoxypyridinoline) osteoporosis test measures breakdown of collagen
and elevated levels indicate osteoporosis. The test can be done on
blood
or urine and
repeated as frequently as needed to gauge the progress of your bone
strengthening program of weighlifting, supplements etc.
Heel ultrasound is a noninvasive but crude measure and the
DEXA xray test is very accurate but there is a small risk in any X-ray and
x-rays should be minimized.
NTx N-telopeptide test can also be used.
